On Saturday night, the Colorado Springs-based LGBTQ Club Q was subjected to a mass shooting. However, attendees at Club Q were able to eventually physically disarm the shooter in order to prevent him from doing even more damage.
The shooter’s use of a long rifle, per the subsequent police report, undoubtedly made it easier for those at Club Q to stop him.
However, the event itself has raised questions about what led up to the shooting. Others have asked whether or not negative attitudes toward the LGBTQ community were a factor.
Unfortunately, another byproduct of what happened on Saturday night is the renewal of the gun control debate. On Sunday, Joe Biden immediately jumped into the fray with the release of a statement calling for an assault weapons ban, per Breitbart News.
The Statement From Biden
The president mentioned that a motive has yet to be determined in the attack on Club Q. This was then followed up with a statement regarding growing hatred towards the LBGTQ+ community.
After this, Biden quickly moved to “gun violence,” categorizing it as an “epidemic” of public health. The president then went on to say that despite his current efforts on gun control, an “assault weapons ban” is necessary for the nation.

This is not the president’s first time calling for an assault weapons ban. However, following a shooting involving a handgun earlier this month, Biden also demanded a ban on what he called “assault weapons.”
This statement from the president arrived as many on the left started ripping into the National Rifle Association (NRA). This is unfortunately a recurring theme after mass shootings, despite the fact that not a single NRA member has ever committed a mass shooting.
Growing Animosity Towards Gun Ownership
Biden’s demand for an assault weapons ban comes after the left rallied credit card companies to change how firearms purchases are categorized.
Since then, major carriers like American Express, MasterCard, and Visa announced that firearms, along with related buys, will be categorized separately. Republican lawmakers have been railing against this, warning that it ostracizes and stigmatizes gun ownership.

Meanwhile, as Biden demands a ban on “assault weapons,” many Americans believe that he considers just about any firearm to be an “assault weapon.”
Just earlier this year, the president claimed falsely that a handgun could carry dozens of rounds and blow someone’s lung outside of their body. Biden has likewise made other statements that demonstrate his ignorance regarding firearms.
With Democrats no longer having full control of Congress, passing anti-gun legislation may be more challenging than Biden thinks.
