For going on nearly two years, the 2020 presidential election continues to be a serious subject of controversy. There are many doubts about the legitimacy of the election.
However, even more so, controversy still exists to this very day about what legal role then-Vice President Mike Pence had in overseeing the certification of the Electoral College’s votes.
Some people, including former President Trump, have argued that as president of the US Senate, Pence had the authority to toss out votes perceived as fraudulent and otherwise overturn the 2020 election.
On Friday, Pence came out swinging against this, as Breitbart News covers. Pence declared Trump as “wrong” for saying he had the power as president of the Senate to overturn the 2020 election.
The Latest from Pence on the 2020 Presidential Election
During public remarks before the Federalist Society in Florida, Pence did not hold back in speaking about what’s turning out to be one of America’s most controversial presidential elections.
The former vice president declared that contrary to assertions from Trump, he could not overturn the result of 2020, even as the president of the Senate. Pence didn’t stop there, though.
Mike Pence today: “I heard this week that Pres Trump said I had the right to overturn the election. Pres Trump is wrong .. There is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person can choose the American president.” pic.twitter.com/Pt8H4Um0MC

He went on to declare the notion of one individual being able to determine who is president as “un-American.” Pence also firmly noted that US elections belong to the American people and the American people alone.
Pence even reminded that just as he couldn’t topple the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, current Vice President Kamala Harris will not have the power to topple the 2024 presidential election results when she and Biden are voted out of office.
Reaction from the American Public
Remarks from the former vice president before the Federalist Society on Friday rapidly went viral. Many Americans took to social media and declared that Pence was correct in asserting that he did not have the authority to unilaterally toss out votes.
Other folks mentioned that if vice presidents could automatically overturn elections, America would never see tranquil power transitions in the United States.
The mainstream media also had a field day with the remarks from the former vice president.
"Mike Pence… for the first time uttering the words… Donald Trump is wrong, just finally coming out and saying it. Donald Trump is wrong from the loyal vice president, the most loyal person to Donald Trump… It's an extraordinary moment" – @jonkarl w/ @NicolleDWallace pic.twitter.com/B4rUQDYL82

Various outlets covered Pence’s remarks as him “breaking” from Trump; others declared the former vice president’s Friday statements as some of the strongest remarks he’s made “against” Trump.
Mike Pence is believed to be one of the possible contenders for the 2024 presidential election. Likewise, former President Trump is also expected to run.
Prior to the statements from Pence yesterday, reports indicated that he hadn’t directly spoken to Trump in over one year.
