Mitt Romney Dismisses Talk of Liz Cheney Running For President

Last week, Rep. Liz Cheney was not able to win her primary election to remain in the House of Representatives.

With much backing from former President Trump and his supporters, attorney Harriet Hageman defeated Cheney in the primary and will now ascend to the general election in Wyoming.

With Cheney now being an outgoing lawmaker, there are questions about what comes next. The Wyoming Republican herself stated that she’s going to do everything in her power to ensure that Trump doesn’t come back to the White House.

Meanwhile, amid chatter of Cheney making a presidential run of her own in 2024, Utah Sen. Mitt Romney is weighing in with his thoughts about all this, per The Hill.

Romney on Cheney’s Chances in the 2024 Presidential Election

Days ago, Romney informed Deseret News that he doesn’t believe Cheney stands much chance of launching a successful run for the White House.

According to the Utah congressman, what would work against Cheney is the reality of her being “outside” of the 45th president’s circle.

Romney also went on to say that if Trump himself doesn’t run, the likeliest contenders are going to be either his allies or Republicans who’ve distanced themselves from all the moving parts surrounding Trump.

Despite declaring that Cheney wouldn’t be the nominee in the 2024 presidential election, Romney tipped his hat to her, saying he admires her “courage” in standing against Trump.

Romney, who’s had sort of a love-hate relationship with the former president, stated Cheney did what she viewed as the right thing and he shares her views.

The Foreseeable Path Forward For Cheney

For the remainder of Cheney’s time in Congress, she’s expected to continue her work on the January 6 committee.

The Wyoming Republican has been adamant that her presence on the committee is important for the sake of democracy and for revealing the truth about what transpired on January 6, 2021.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, the only other GOP member serving on the January 6 committee, declared that Cheney is a fighter. During a recent interview, the Illinois Republican even proclaimed that Cheney would pursue Trump to “the gates of hell.”

Time will tell what ventures the outgoing congresswoman pursues. Some have predicted that she may work with various anti-Trump political groups to shut down his possible candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.

Others believe that a mainstream media news outlet like CNN, MSNBC, etc., may ultimately end up hiring Cheney. There’s also the possibility for her to pick up a book deal or other opportunities tied to her time in Congress and her fight against Trump.
