Someone burned anti-Trump numbers into the grass of one of America’s most sacred public spaces — and federal investigators want to know who did it.
Story Snapshot
- The numbers “86 47” appeared burned or stained into the grass on the National Mall near the Washington Monument, and U.S. Park Police opened a vandalism investigation.
- The Trump administration called it “deranged vandalism” and said any threat against the president is taken very seriously.
- The incident happened days before Trump’s UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House and his 80th birthday weekend.
- Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey already faces federal charges for posting the same “86 47” numbers on social media.
Anti-Trump Numbers Burned Into National Mall Grass
U.S. Park Police confirmed they are investigating vandalism after the numbers “86 47” appeared in discolored grass on the West Lawn near the Washington Monument on June 11. Officers first noticed the markings before noon. The numbers were so large they were visible from a webcam at the top of the Washington Monument. Park workers roped off the area, and National Guard members directed the public away from the scene.[15]
Police collected grass samples to determine what caused the discoloration. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the marks were burned, chemically treated, or caused by something else. The exact cause remains unknown.[1] The slang term “86” can mean to remove or eliminate something. Combined with “47” — Trump’s number as the 47th president — the Trump administration says the phrase is a threat against the president.[10]
White House and Interior Department Respond Strongly
The Department of the Interior did not mince words. A spokesperson called it “deranged vandalism” and said it “will not be tolerated.” The statement added, “Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.”[15] The White House also weighed in, saying anyone who “engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible.”[3]
The timing raised eyebrows. The markings appeared just days before President Trump was set to host the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Freedom 250 event at the White House — and right before his 80th birthday. The New York Times reported the marks were visible from a webcam as early as Wednesday afternoon, meaning someone likely made them overnight or in the early morning hours.[11]
Comey Case Adds Serious Context
This is not the first time “86 47” has sparked a federal investigation. Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey was charged with two federal counts after posting a photo on social media showing seashells arranged to spell out “86 47.” Comey faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He denies the post was a threat and calls the charges politically motivated.[10] The Comey case set a clear precedent — the Trump administration treats this phrase as a serious threat, not a harmless slogan.
The “86 47” phrase has appeared at protests and online throughout Trump’s second term. A federal judge ruled separately this month that the numbers alone, displayed on a protest flag outside a federal courthouse, were protected free speech. That ruling adds legal complexity to the investigation. Still, defacing public property is a different matter from holding a sign. Vandalizing a national landmark is vandalism regardless of the message — and federal law takes that seriously.[13]
A Sacred Space Targeted During America’s Renewal
The National Mall is at the center of Trump’s effort to restore and beautify America’s monuments. The administration says it has cleaned and renovated more than 45 monuments and memorials, 28 statues, and 22 fountains in Washington, D.C. Defacing the Mall’s lawn with an anti-presidential message in the middle of that effort is a direct slap at both the president and the American people who love these landmarks. No suspect has been named yet, but the investigation is active and ongoing.[1]
