AI Clues Haunt Palisades Fire Trial

A Trump-hating, Luigi Mangione-admiring Uber driver who allegedly used a lighter to spark the fire that became the deadly Palisades wildfire now has his fate in the hands of a jury.

Story Highlights

  • Jonathan Rinderknecht, an Uber driver with strong anti-wealth views, is on trial for federal arson charges linked to the January 2025 Palisades Fire that killed people and destroyed thousands of homes.
  • Prosecutors say cell data, surveillance footage, and Rinderknecht’s own admission that he brought a lighter to the fire’s origin point all place him at the scene.
  • His phone contained AI-generated images of burning forests and ChatGPT searches about fire liability — evidence prosecutors call deeply damning.
  • The defense argues the evidence is entirely circumstantial and that fireworks set by someone else may have started the blaze.

Who Is Jonathan Rinderknecht?

Jonathan Rinderknecht worked as an Uber driver in the Los Angeles area. Prosecutors describe him as a bitter loner who resented wealthy people. Two Uber passengers testified he drove erratically and expressed strong political views just hours before the fire started on New Year’s Eve 2024. Prosecutors also noted he admired Luigi Mangione, the man charged with murdering a health insurance executive — a figure celebrated in some far-left circles as a symbol of class warfare.[2]

Fire investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) concluded the January 1 fire grew too fast in its first minute to have been caused by fireworks or a cigarette. That analysis pointed to an open flame — a lighter — as the ignition source.[1] Rinderknecht admitted to investigators he brought a lighter to the exact spot where the fire started.[5]

The Digital Evidence Is Hard to Ignore

Investigators found disturbing content on Rinderknecht’s iPhone. He had used ChatGPT to create AI-generated images of burning forests and crowds running from fires. He also searched ChatGPT for information about legal liability if someone started a fire with a cigarette.[6] Cell phone location data and surveillance footage placed him at the trailhead near the fire’s origin after dropping off a passenger that night.[4] He also lied to law enforcement at first, denying he had smoked or started any fire, before later admitting he had been smoking near the origin point.[3]

An expert witness testified that Rinderknecht fits the profile of a revenge-driven arsonist.[8] The prosecution argues the small January 1 fire at Lachman Lane was never fully put out — and that it “held over” underground before exploding into the catastrophic Palisades Fire on January 7. That fire killed people and wiped out entire neighborhoods across Pacific Palisades.

What the Defense Is Arguing

Defense attorney Steve Haney says all the evidence against his client is circumstantial. No eyewitness saw Rinderknecht light the fire. Haney argues fireworks set off by another person may have started the blaze. One firefighter testified he heard fireworks and saw flashes of light near midnight on January 1, though another firefighter said he did not.[11] The defense also points out that Rinderknecht made 16 calls to 911 after the fire started — behavior they say is inconsistent with someone who set the fire on purpose.[12]

The judge ruled that arguments blaming the Los Angeles Fire Department for failing to put out the January 1 fire were inadmissible at trial. That decision cut off one of the defense’s key strategies for shifting blame away from Rinderknecht. The jury began deliberations after hearing closing arguments, with the verdict expected to hinge on whether prosecutors built a strong enough circumstantial case. Legal experts note that arson convictions are routinely won without direct eyewitness proof — courts have long held that solid circumstantial evidence carries the same legal weight.[15]
