A Utah mother who penned a children’s book about coping with grief after fatally poisoning her husband received a life sentence without parole Wednesday, displaying no emotion as the judge delivered the verdict on what would have been her victim’s 44th birthday.
From Grieving Widow to Convicted Killer
Kouri Richins, 36, laced her husband Eric Richins’ Moscow Mule cocktail with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022. Authorities initially suspected an accidental overdose until investigators uncovered a darker truth. Prosecutors revealed Richins faced over $4 million in debt and had secretly taken out a $2 million life insurance policy on her husband. Before her arrest in Spring 2023, she promoted a children’s book titled “Are You With Me?” on morning television, presenting herself as a widow helping her sons process their father’s death.
Stone-Faced Sentencing and Family Fallout
Wearing a neon green t-shirt over a grey long-sleeved shirt, Richins addressed her three sons during the hearing after they expressed feeling unsafe if she were ever released. “I will never be angry at you for your feelings,” she told them, claiming she had tried contacting them for years. She accused her late husband’s family of blocking communication and insisted the boys remained her world. “I promise you, boys, one day it will be over,” she stated. The children are now being raised by Eric Richins’ sister and her husband.
Financial Motive Sealed Her Fate
The prosecution built their case around financial desperation. Evidence showed Richins faced crushing debt while simultaneously securing a massive insurance policy without her husband’s knowledge or consent. Her March 2025 conviction came after jurors heard testimony about the calculated nature of the poisoning. The life sentence ensures she will spend the remainder of her days behind bars for transforming what should have been a quiet evening into a deadly crime scene, all while preparing to profit from the tragedy she orchestrated.
