67-Year Democrat STAR REVOLTS—Party Won’t Recover…

Prominent constitutional attorney Alan Dershowitz has officially registered as a Republican after 67 years as a Democrat, formalizing a political exodus driven by what he describes as the Democratic Party’s embrace of anti-Israel extremism and abandonment of civil liberties principles.

From Lifelong Democrat to Republican Convert

Alan Dershowitz first registered as a Democrat in 1959, building a distinguished career as a Harvard Law professor and constitutional attorney while maintaining unwavering party loyalty for over six decades. His political journey included endorsing Hillary Clinton in 2008 and Barack Obama, positioning himself as a prominent liberal voice in legal circles. The transformation from lifelong Democrat to registered Republican represents a dramatic reversal that Dershowitz attributes to fundamental changes within the Democratic Party rather than shifts in his own principles. On April 20, 2026, he formalized this break by publishing a Wall Street Journal op-ed announcing his Republican registration, citing the party’s leftward drift on Israel and civil liberties issues.

The DNC Convention That Sparked Disgust

The July 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago proved to be Dershowitz’s political breaking point, crystallizing frustrations that had been building since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. The convention featured anti-Israel protesters and speakers while several Democratic lawmakers boycotted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s congressional address. Vice President Kamala Harris, who received the presidential nomination, notably skipped Netanyahu’s speech, a decision Dershowitz viewed as emblematic of the party’s shift. In September 2024, he appeared on “Talkline with Zev Brenner” to publicly renounce his Democratic affiliation, declaring “I am no longer a Democrat. I am an Independent” while expressing disgust at what he characterized as the party’s anti-Jewish and anti-Israel transformation.

Targeting the Democratic Party’s Progressive Wing

Dershowitz directed his criticism specifically at prominent progressive Democrats whom he accused of fostering anti-Israel sentiment within the party. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders drew particular scrutiny for their positions on Israel and Palestine, which Dershowitz characterized as crossing from legitimate policy disagreement into anti-Semitism. He also called out Reverend Al Sharpton for what he described as a history of anti-Jewish rhetoric. This focus on the party’s left wing represents a departure from Dershowitz’s earlier political battles, when he threatened to leave the Democratic Party in 2016 if Keith Ellison became DNC chair. The current exodus targets systemic shifts rather than individual appointments, reflecting deeper concerns about the party’s ideological trajectory.

Implications for Jewish Voters and Political Realignment

Dershowitz’s party switch carries significance beyond one prominent attorney’s personal decision, potentially signaling broader shifts among Jewish voters traditionally aligned with Democrats. His transition from Independent status in September 2024 to full Republican registration by April 2026 demonstrates an evolution from protest to commitment, particularly as he continues defending President Trump on constitutional matters and publishing works exploring controversial topics like presidential term limits. Critics, including commentary from Washington Monthly, question whether Dershowitz’s alignment with Republicans represents principle or opportunism, noting inconsistencies with his past criticism of Trump. For many Americans frustrated with political elites who seem more concerned with partisan positioning than addressing genuine concerns about anti-Semitism and international security, Dershowitz’s decision highlights how establishment parties may be losing credibility with voters who feel their fundamental values are being abandoned for political expediency.

  1. I fully understand why he switched, but it is mostly based on her personal Jewish connection, and not so much on what is as bad, or worse, the insane direction of the Democrat Party.

Republicans leave something to be desired, but they tower over the Dems when it comes to working for the best future for the USA. If the Dems take control, the USA is finished.
